THE ESTATE

Tradition inspires us
since 1578

WE’VE BEEN BLESSED WITH A PIECE OF LAND IN ALENQUER, MORE PROPERLY NEAR THE SMALL LOCATION OF MECA, WHERE WE PRODUCE OUR WINES WITH A UNIQUE PROFILE THAT RESULTS FROM THE HUG BETWEEN THE SERRA DE MONTEJUNTO AND THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.

The first mention of Quinta de São Bartolomeu appears in a document dated 1578, a troubled year in the Portuguese History in which King D. Sebastião, “The Desired”, dies in the Battle of Alcácer-Quibir and Cardinal D. Henrique takes the throne. After more than 400 years, Quinta de São Bartolomeu is today the birthplace of wines of excellent quality recognized in the main international competitions such as the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles or the International Wine Challenge.

HISTORICAL PLACE

LOCATED IN ALENQUER, QUINTA DE SÃO BARTOLOMEU IS PART OF A SET OF MANOR ESTATES THAT CONSTITUTE AN ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE THAT IN OUR COUNTRY IS ONLY PARALLEL IN MINHO.

In the 17th century, the property belonged to Luis Meireles de Pedrosa, of the Order of Christ. It was in the 19th century that D. José da Cunha, Marquis of Olhão and great-grandfather of the current owners, inherited Quinta de São Bartolomeu, who received the property from his mother and aunts in 1998. At that time, we were essentially quality grape producers, being one of our main clients the neighboring Quinta de Pancas.

SOME CHALLENGES

HOWEVER, THE ACQUISITION OF QUINTA DE PANCAS, IN 2006, BY COMPANHIA DAS QUINTAS, AND THE CONSEQUENTIAL WITHDRAWAL OF THE GRAPES PURCHASING IN JULY OF THIS YEAR, CAME TO ORIGIN A SMALL CRISIS IN THE CORE OF QUINTA DE SÃO BARTOLOMEU, BEING FORCED TO SELL ITS QUALITY GRAPES AT A RELATIVELY LOW PRICE.

With this setback, we took the opportunity to start a long-desired winemaking experience. It was in this way that Sociedade Agrícola Cunha Folque, which manages Quinta de São Bartolomeu, vinified, for the first time, about five tons of grapes of Merlot variety and five tons of Cabernet Sauvignon variety. With the excellent result obtained by the quality of these wines, we understood then the great potential of this terroir.

A DECISION

GLOBALLY, THE WINE PROJECT OF QUINTA DE SÃO BARTOLOMEU COMPRISES TODAY ABOUT 40 HECTARES, INCLUDING THE LATEST PROPERTIES ACQUIRED: QUINTA DA TAIPA (10HA) AND QUINTA NOVA (3HA).

This last property adjoins the N9 road and has an old wine cellar in ruins although it’s our goal to recover it and integrate it into our wine project. Our motto is based on making known the wines of Quinta de São Bartolomeu and the region where they’re born, something that also includes our bet in wine tourism as a bond between our wines and consumers. This’s a strategy that has been implemented by the younger generation that has added a touch of modernity to the project.

THE PROPERTY

THE ESTATE’S CURRENT BUILDINGS WERE RESTORED IN THE RESIDENTIAL AREA, IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE PREVIOUS CENTURY, TODAY PRESENTING A BODY ALIGNED WITH A LARGE FACADE. BEHIND IT, THERE’S THE PATIO WITH ACCESS THROUGH A BEAUTIFUL BAROQUE ARCH.

Also noteworthy are the monumental portico and staircase that give access to the old vegetable garden with its irrigation tank that stores the water from 3 water sources located 50 meters from the chapel located in the continuity of the main residential body. One of the walls of the residence bears the arms of the “Cunhas” Marquees de Olhão, in the family of which this property has remained since the mid-18th century. In addition to the residential buildings and chapel described above, the property has several buildings, old dairy houses, haystacks, stables, horse and harness houses, caretakers ‘and employees’ houses, etc.
