The first reference to Quinta de São Bartolomeu appears in a document dated 1578. But the history surrounding the Estate is much earlier, given that the current owners descend from Tristão da Cunha (1460-1540), a famous navigator who discovered the islands that bear his name.

17th Century

The property, which was part of the Order of Malta, belongs to Luis Meireles de Pedrosa, of the Order of Christ, who’s buried in the Church of São Francisco, in Alenquer.

The neighboring Quinta de Pancas, one of Quinta de São Bartolomeu’s main grape buyers, was bought by Companhia das Quintas and consequently ceased the grapes purchase, which caused a small crisis in the heart of Quinta de São Bartolomeu. It was then decided to start winemaking and producing own label wines.
